Cats are one of my favorite animals. They will love and give you more affection that dogs in the sense that they aren’t expecting a treat for doing so. You can train your cat in many ways to do different things just as you would a dog. One of the most important lessons you need to teach your cat is how to use a cat litter tray properly.

There are other words for litter tray such as litter box and cat box, but they are all for one purpose. Your feline needs to go to washroom sometime, and that is exactly what they are designed for. You fill them with litter and when it becomes soiled you change it. There are many types and styles of litter boxes but what is more important is the litter itself and not all litter is the same.

If you have a young kitten, they will not be too fussy about the types of litter you’re using. Older cats however will become fussy about the litter you provide them and may not use it altogether. It can be a difficult decision to pick out the right material to fill your cat litter box. There are sawdust pellets, litter crystals, clumping litter, and some made out of recycled papers. Each of them has their advantages and disadvantages. Here is an overview of the basics.

Sawdust Pellets – These are quite cheap if you can find them. However, some contain large amounts of ammonia to keep the smell down. This would be quite a problem in a small place like an apartment or bedroom. Any generic sawdust pellet is okay, but Fresh Step is a popular choice by cat lovers in our area.

Clumping Litter – This allows you to remove only the soiled section of litter because it will clump together. Therefore you do not have to change the whole cat litter tray which could save you money and frustration. With many of the dry litter types, they do contain a bit of dust that can get on your kitties paws. It used to cost much more than regular litter but they can be bought for around the same price when on sale. Brands like Scoop Away and Better Way are excellent brand choices.

Regular Litter and Crystals – The regular litter is one of the most common and probably the cheapest form of cat litter you can buy. The only problem is that when you cat uses the litter, large amounts will become soiled and need to be changed. Litter crystals will absorb wetness and keep down the smells but not all cats are fond of the smell that these crystals have. Would you want to go to the washroom in an area that has a very strong smell of toilet bowl cleaner? You might consider brands like Litter Pearls and tidy Cats for crystals as they have a good reputation.

With all of the litter types, you are bound to have litter all over the floor because cats like to bury their deeds. To combat this issue you may look in to getting a cover for the cat litter tray to prevent this type of mess. We discuss in other articles about specific types of cat litter boxes that are currently available such as an automatic litter tray, Litter Robot, and Litter Maid.

Remember to change your cat litter tray often and clean it well. I recommend each time that you do a litter change, that you also disinfect the whole thing and wash it. This will keep the smells down and molds and bacteria from forming. Your cat will definitely love you for it too!
