Most cat owners hate the problems that traditional litter boxes present, and that is why we are going to talk about the Littermaid. There are some main points I want to bring up about these “automatic” litter boxes so let’s discuss them.

1. You will notice on a lot of the reviews and forums that the Littermaid is really a big improvement over having to do things yourself and making a mess. However, some models actually make it more difficult. The problem is that there are automatic rakes that become clogged but they still need to be cleaned now and again. And on earlier models the rakes can’t be taken out so that they can be cleaned easily. However in newer models they have fixed this problem.

Another problem that is often discussed is that the parts don’t seem to fit properly and this can sometimes lead to cat waste and litter ending up on the floor.

2. I hate to bring up another sticking point but I think that it is only fair. When the rakes do become clogged and gummed up with cat waste, the motor will have to work much harder than normal. This can lead to the motor breaking or becoming very weak over time. If you don’t notice it immediately and things progress, you may have a very disgusting mess to sort out. This has actually led to some people tossing the whole unit in the garbage and going back to a regular cat litter box.

3. The Littermaid litter box line is really effective in getting rid of smells and other odors. The reason for this is because that it will remove the cat waste and put it in to a sealed container. The container isn’t huge so you will definitely need to change it every couple of days.

4. I know this wasn’t the most positive of reviews but I had to be honest. I’ve tried many other types of litter boxes and have finally settled on the ScoopFree litter box because I can use the silica crystals easy and they don’t clump up and become clogged in rakes.

The Litter Robot is also another litter box I wasn’t impressed with. I used it for a day before it broke down. I’m not sure if it was maybe a defect, but I returned it immediately because I was already frustrated with some other boxes.

With that being said, you really should do some research and test out different litter boxes. We all know that a smelly litter box can turn a room or apartment sour so don’t hesitate on picking one up.
